![]() ![]() Transformer traces the primacy of the Krebs cycle-and its reverse-from deep sea hydrothermal vents and the “Cambrian Explosion” to the individual, yet universal, experience of aging. Along the way, Lane brilliantly recounts the scientific detective work that discovered this process while deconstructing textbook views about metabolism. In Transformer, Lane guides readers through the “conflicted merry-go-round of energy and matter” that is the Krebs cycle. Biochemist Nick Lane is among the vanguard of researchers who ask how this complex, contradictory pathway of creation, destruction, and renewal within our cells could help us understand questions from the origins of life to the devastation of cancer. Generations of students have learned how the Krebs cycle generates the building blocks of life and fuels the furnace of respiration. ![]() ![]() A renowned biochemist’s illuminating inquiry into the Krebs cycle and the origins of life. ![]()

![]() The novel begins slowly-an absolute necessity for full appreciation of the action and character notes that will follow. The story follows cousins Aric and Maurin, kidnapped from their home planet and thrust into a harsh world of slavery, hedonism, and quasi-supernatural civil war. Robert Mullin is one of the exceptions to the rule.īid the Gods Arise is an epic fantasy, with enough sci-fi elements blended in to keep even space opera fans engaged. Precious few Christian sci-fi authors are successfully navigating a good solid story-staying true to a faith message without bludgeoning the reader into a catatonic gospel-state. The overabundance of message-heavy works, filled with awkward references, cheap conversion stories, and “God shows up, so everything is alright,” endings, is problematic. Even as an author in the genre, I generally avoid “Christian” sci-fi and fantasy. ![]() ![]() Catholic hatred of Anne through the centuries demonises (accurately) her for England’s break with Rome and the growth of Protestantism in the country. In addition, she is a perfectly sweet doormat and for too accepting of Jason's rejection and snide attitude. Also, she becomes a teacher even though she apparently has a severe learning disability – weird. There is an inconsistency between her supposed mental deficiencies and her obvious social skills. Gracie’s characterization makes absolutely no sense. ![]() Rather the characters are one dimensional and vapid, and the story is ridiculous. ![]() This book is awful but it is not the borderline incest that turned me off. He also described events that occurred whilst he was in surgery, like his parents being in separate rooms and his father praying (and yelling) to God. The mystery got stranger as Colton went on to describe details of his great-grandfather, who had passed away 30 years before Colton was born. There was no way for him to have known about her at such a young age. His parents, initially confused but passing it off as what he might’ve heard at church, were flummoxed when Colton went on to describe meeting his older sister, who he had never met in real life (since she had died in a miscarriage). ![]() The surgery was marred by multiple complications, and Colton took some time to recover, but fortunately, the procedure was eventually a success, and the young child could go home.Ī few months later, Colton began to relate his experiences of the time he was in surgery, claiming to have met Jesus and that he was sung to by angels.
